Healthy Sleep Habits To Improve Your Life

Having difficulty sleeping is a very common problem for many of us. At some stage, about 20% of people will feel too little sleep or poor sleep quality. What follows is a collection of hints and tips to help you improve your sleep:

- Force yourself to wake up each day at the same time for you to be more productive, structured and routine.

- Go to bed when you are already tired. It should take you about 5-10 minutes to fall asleep. The truth is, you do not need the same amount of sleep each night. Listen to your body and your mind. By conditioning yourself to wake up at the same time each day, you should be able to maximize your energy and feel less tired during the day.

- Avoid daytime naps. Small sleep cycles or naps can give you some boost of energy but can lead you to have trouble falling asleep at night.

- Put a sleep mask if you have some kind of light that enters your room. Studies have shown that turning off the lights will lead to a more rested sleep.

- Eat your meals during the same time every day because it will regulate melatonin, ghrelin, leptin and other hormones that affect your sleep cycle. And to add to this, do avoid eating just before sleeping.

- Lack of sleep has a bad effect on the "appetite control" hormone leptin. Leptin levels signal the brain when the body needs more power. Sleep deprivation leads to a release of some hormones which can lower leptin levels. These low levels of leptin were actually associated with obesity. Therefore, lack of sleep, more risk of obesity. :-(

- Reduce your intake of caffeine during the day. I'm actually guilty of this one. ;-)

- Reduce your alcohol intake because too much alcohol will disrupt your sleep and can reduce the amount of deep sleep.

- Although some experts do not advocate the exercise before going to bed (because of accumulation of adrenaline and the time it takes the body to return to normal, recent research has shown that it may actually improve your sleep. Many people also report that it is a good way to deliver stress and relax before bed.

So there, make sure you sleep enough to get your energy going =)
